All Palm users have had problems with Graffiti, the handwriting recognition program for the Palm. That is where Tealscript comes in- a customizable program that learns your handwriting and decrease text input errors. Made by one of the top software companies for the Palm, TealScript is one of the few must have Palm programs (along with Datebk4).
INTRO-
Tealscript is available for $16.95. It truly is worth its price. Tealscript works in several ways. First, it can be "trained" to learn your handwriting. You train it by writing a sentence- apparently Tealscript analyzes how you shape your letters and tweaks with the graffiti alphabet to better identify the letters you write. Also, Tealscript allows for multiple strokes. What I mean by this is that you can write an E as E or e. Not only that, but you can enter your own letter strokes. Sit back and relax as I discuss the greatness of this program in more detail. (I will also try to compare it to CIC's Jot, another Palm handwriting program I've reviewed.
FEATURES
-Allows capitalization on alphanumeric border-Also a feature of Jot, in Tealscript, you do not have to "shift" (by tapping on the graffiti area) to capitalize letters. You just start the stroke on the alphanumeric border, and the letter is automatically written as a capital. This is a nice feature, though you can actually get a hack that does this (Middlecapshack)
-Train ProfileAllows you to enter a series of letters, numbers, symbols etc. Tealscript "learns" how you write the letters and adjusts the graffiti so that it is customized to your writing style.
-Alternate strokes/ distorted strokes Tealscript has been programmed to recognize alternate and distorted figures. What this means is that it can recognize a capital, A, lower case a. Distorted figures are figures that are not properly shaped. For example, if you make a B that is too narrow on top, the traditional Graffiti may not recognize it or may misidentify it. Tealscript is trained to recognize commonly miswritten letters
-Statistics This program keeps stats on the percentage of time you either makes strokes that are corrected or unrecognized. It tells you letter you frequently make mistakes on and can show you the last 5 strokes you made (for example you draw a V and it is unrecognized, you can look to see how you drew it. Which leads me too...
Customizable letters!! This is the best thing about TealScript. You can customize the alphabet. For example, do you always draw a V wrong? You can create your own V stroke (my customized stroke is like a check mark and works great!). Not only that but there are other cool things you can do. I have added some symbols to the number area so that I don't have to shift before writing them. This is very convenient for writing dashes (as in phone numbers), periods, commas, and whatever else. These symbols do not interfere with the number recognition. Plus, if you create a stroke that gets misidentified, you can either erase it or tweak it.
-MACROS Is there a word you always write. You can create a macro for it. What I mean by this is that you can design a symbol...when you write this symbol, Tealscript will automatically write the word you want. For example, if you always supercalifragilisticexpialidotious, you can assign a triangle to spell out the entire word
Hack that comes with program installs it after every soft reset This is great. Jot must be manually reinstalled after each reset, which is a pain. Tealscript has a hack, Rescript, which will reinstall the program... a nice feature
CONS
-Statistics get reset on soft resets.
-Recognition not 100%, I still make errors (though less frequently
-no on screen text echo- what I mean by this is that some programs will show the text you write on the screen as you write it. This is great especially in the early stages, when you are still fine tuning your custom alphabet. Then again, you can download TealEcho for this feature
Comparison with Jot!
Tealscript blows Jot away! Jot has letter strokes that are different than Graffiti. However, it has some drawbacks. First, it costs $40, as compared to $17 for tealscript. Second, Jot is not customizable. It has some nice letter strokes, but you can't add your own. Furthermore, it doesn't learn the way you write your own strokes. There is no reason to get Jot. It you don't like Graffiti, try out TealScript.
VERDICTIf you have the money, give Tealpoint your $. You won't regret it. At least give TealScript a test ride. Make sure to skim through the manual to learn the finer points. I assure you that after a week or two, you will be amazed at how infrequently you make errors in writing!
