| slyfur's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 3800 R500GT |
I have been working with a group of about 300 different Latitude Cpt's (150 - Cpt C's and 150 Cpt S's). I believe these systems are virtually identical to the Inspiron 3800's except for the color of the plastics. The specs are good enough and overall these systems are a good value. Let me just outline the problems that we've seen over the past year-and-a-half:
1) flimsy plastics - there are several parts of the laptop that are prone to breaking with NORMAL wear-and-tear. The plastic near the display hinges has broken for many of our users. Also, the media bay latches can be easily broken if you aren't careful. I personally haven't broken any of this plastic, but I see these all the time. There is a lot of "flex" in the unit.
2) average quality control - we've have numerous users who have had batteries replaced and several people with keyboard problems (primarily - the 8 i k , and Alt keys sometimes quit working.
3) One other thing that I forgot to add in my epinion about the Cpt's is that watch out for the Xircom RealPort card with these systems. They seem to interfere with the audio playback (frequent hiccups).
Despite these problems, I wouldn't buy any laptop except Dell. Customer service is pretty good for the basic stuff. But, I think I would go with the Latitude C600 line instead. The plastics seem much more durable and I don't think that the price is too much more that the Inspiron 3800.
