Dell Inspirion 5000e

The Bottom Line My 5000e has experienced what I considered excessive repair but dell is quick to dispatch parts or tech to house.

Just took delivery of a Dell Inspirion 5000e

For starters it has not been trouble free.

First it would lockup on scanner software with
only way to proceed was to turn off. scanning
software was pre-installed by dell.

Second modem would keep hanging up while on the net
and again lock up the computer with only way to
continue to turn off start over.

Dell was prompt to address the problem but the up
to 1 hour wait on the phone was tiring. The lockup
while using the scanner could not be determined. They
set up the computer to work in trouble shooting mode
but no help. So they started addressing the modem
problem. When trouble shooting the modem it gave a
message to repair modem. They again were prompt to
have a tech call and set up an in house call to replace.
Problem now was the modem operation was worst. Back to
the phone and an hour with a tech and now running
the diagnostic program it pointed to the modem. About to
give up and have Dell just take system back. Tech
found a service bulletin about the modem and its
reaction to microsoft outlook software. We downloaded
a fix and so far it seems to be working. Scanner problem
??? don't use much.

I have an older dell desktop and its still running
so decided to stay with the company and tech has
always been very helpful.

Some specs on what have 5GB drive, 15 XGA TFT, DVD, 64MB Sdram
extra battery, zip drive.

The 15" screen is easy to read even from angles, but can
see a need for a larger hard drive than 5GB. Would like
to see replacement of some keys especially the back space
and return. The Celeron processor seems fine for me since
all that do is web searching and personal business. So
can not comment on speed as to games, etc. With the 3
year warranty not to concerned right now as to other
problem. Big recommendation from my experience is the
Tech help which has been good.

When ordering online be prepared to have a different amount
charged to your card than what was shown at the online site.
I think it comes across under shipping and taxes. I address
this but got no reply.


02/03/01 update - Not going too well. More replacements

The support plate that holds the accessory tray (cd/zip)
broke a clip which required replacement of the whole
interior plate bracket. Next the screen developed a
large black shadow which eventually covered 1/2 of the
screen, screen was replaced. Ran scandisk and defrag
found the hard drive to be defective so they sent
a new hard drive and zip. Not much else left till
have rebuilt computer.

11/18/02 Dell has not gotten any better. The Cd drive
has since been replaced along with the hard drive for a
second time. I changed to Windows xp but Dell would not
stand behind the warranty anymore with this operating
system, so I had to reinstall Me and the same ole
operation problems are back.
