Add Performance?...ADD RAM

Aug 31 '00

If you are looking to upgrade your old pc, or just give you computer a bit of a speed boost, you dont have to look further than the RAM section of any computer magazine. Dont waste your money on buying a new motherboard and processor, as those will require a few hours of work to install properly. The first thing to do is to open your computer desktop or tower and look at the motherboard. You should be able to see the ram slots on the motherboard, if you dont even know what RAM looks like, it is a little "clip" of circuits that are inserted in a SMALL slot. Ram, not to be confused with pc cards is small and can not be seen by looking at the back of the computer to see the outputs that pc cards give. Once you have located the RAM socket, (if you have any left available) all you have to do to remove the old ram is push out the tabs on the sides and the RAM will pop out. To insert the new ram just pop it into this same slot. Now you may be wondering exactly how much RAM you want and how much it will cost you. Here is what I would recommend:

P75-P133 32 MB RAM
P166-300 64 MB RAM
333-500 96 MB RAM
533-750 128 MB RAM
750+ 256 MB RAM

the 96 MB RAM chip will not be sold in one clip though, so you would have to buy a 64 and a 32 clip to get 96. The most important thing to do when upgrading is to know if your motherboard can support the higher RAM amounts. for example a P75 motherborad is not going to support a 128 MB RAM chip, in fact most P75 motherboards 4 or 8 MB clips, as they usually have 4 RAM slots. If you dont know if your motherboard supports the RAM chip you desire you can call the manufacturer of the computer or get online and put in the Serial # of the motherboard to find its specifications. I hope this tutorial has helped you in your quest for faster, more efficeint computing.
