| Furbster's Full Review: Network Solutions.com |
I have learned allot tonight just by reading other peoples reviews on this company! I had heard that they were pretty rotten to their customers, but I didn't realize the volume of the problem.
I have dealt with network solutions about 4 times in the last 8 months.
The first time was towards the beginning of the year and I had not had much dealing with them. I had only heard about them and I knew what they did of course. It was the first time I was getting my own domain. The situation came about when my web host was supposed to do it for me and like normal they ignored me (if I ever find them on here, I'll gladly do a nice long review on those.. people).
So I went to the website and let me tell you I'm mostly a front end web designer with only a bit of knowledge on how servers and such work. I went through the registration process and it took forever. I had no idea there were other registrars out there or I would have gone with another company (as I've read tonight I've paid too much).
So anyway. The process took so long because it was like dealing with NASA - they have their own lingo and terminology so I have to keep getting their 'definitions' of the terms. They even had little boxes next to the terms so I could get an explanation. I found that convenient. However the explanation served to confuse me more often, because it was riddled with more terms I wasn't familiar with.
I spent a good hour registering my domain, something that should have been quite much more simple then that! English folks, that's what I read, we don't need to reinvent the wheel for such a simple thing!
So I finally got that done. Took all of 4 days for stuff to take effect. I felt ok after that. After all the hour was well spent and I learned quite a bit about their terminology! ;)
So recently I had to change hosts. The process of modifying stuff sucks on here to be blunt. I can see it from both sides though.
The modify process consists of going to the site and filling out the form, pretty simple. But then it requires several email confirmations and forwarding process.
It was a bit of a pain in the butt. Took much longer then it should have and truly I'm unsure of why they give such a run around process. I don't know what they were originally thinking.
I can also see it from their side. Or I think I can. I'm guessing the long process is so that no one who doesn't own certain domains, can't make changes to the registration. It's security is what I think. However I think the security process was made by a paranoid person (and I'm pretty darn paranoid).
I had to (unfortunately) change back to my previous host within a week due to the new host just disappearing into thin air - where did they go? I don't know, but all their services stopped working and all their email bounced and phone number was wrong. Thankfully I knew who the billing company was that represented them. But anyway, that's off topic.
I had to go back and change my information again on NS. I gotta tell you the process gets old real fast! Twice in one week and having to wait for the changes to go into effect can drive a person nuts. It has been 3-4 days, working days, for changes to show up. How nuts is that? I realize the data base there is just bigger then I can imagine. However is live updating really that hard?
I don't know, because I don't know much about their side of the job, so maybe I'm being impatient.
I read there are other sites out there that register domain names for a lot less then NSOL. I may just check them out if I ever get away from my current host. My current host only wants it's clients on NSOL. Figures.
I will give some credit to NS. Their website is very easy to navigate, I didn't get lost once. Their whois directory is real nice and organized. Things look good up front. However I just can't wait until I move - I have a feeling it could turn into a nightmare. I'll be sure to update, if it does!
