Well Blizzard did it again with Diablo, creating an incredible game for the PC. This was a slight departure from their usual fare which included strategy games like Warcraft and Starcraft. This is more of a roleplaying game almost like a very modern day Gauntlet. The basic concept is you take one of 3 characters and work your way down a long series of dungeons until you wind up in hell itself. Each dungeon level is covered with monsters and bad guys that are out to kill you. There is a wide range of monsters throughout the levels, each gets stronger as you progress further. What's cool about the monster progression, is that the game seems to almost choose monsters that will make it more difficult for your character, making the game all the more challenging. For example, if your character is very strong with close range weapons, it always seems like the deeper you go suddenly there are more monsters who fire from long range. The opposite is also true. As you kill these monsters and gain treasure and weaponry you also gain experience which raises your level and skills. There is a little flexibility in what skills you'd like to raise which is nice when you want to customize your characters. The game play itself is terrific, the monsters truly do seem to respond to your weaknesses making the game incredibly challenging. The game is played at a pretty fast pace which makes it even tougher to respond to some of the tricks the monsters throw at you. The graphics and sound is very good, it is not a first person perspective game, but rather you see it as if you were looking in from above. The graphics are very crisp and the effects of the weapons and spells is also very cool. The game is able to be played multi player over the internet as well as single player. I found the multi player to be a bit lacking. It was more or less the exact same as the single, but you are supposed to cooperate with other players. The monsters are therefore a lot more numerous because it expects more players. The multi-player version also made it too easy for a very strong character to come in and just lay waste to medium or weaker characters. This was pretty frustrating. The only other somewhat annoying point of the game was the main village which is sort of your home base. They should have put in the ability to speed up your character when in town because it became very annoying walking around to each of the stores. After making 20 or so trips this gets pretty annoying. But these little things certainly do not take away from a terrific game. Be warned though, the game is VERY addicting.
