| eljuanbobo's Full Review: Apple Power Macintosh G4 Multimedia |
Apple’s resurgence was not only one of a series of powerful processors, but one of design. Beige was out, Blue was in. And now it’s graphite. I have used both Windows NT based systems and Macintosh for a variety of video post, 3d modeling/rendering, web design, and graphics. Simply put, there is NO better machine out there.
Compared to windows and unix variants, system setup and altering is a snap. As is reformatting. The computer is exceptionally quiet and does not create that much heat.
Memory is expandable to 1.5 GB (yes, 1.5 gigs) and internal hard drive space with SCSI raid gets up to 36x3 (108 GB in a SCSI raid). I’m not sure of the EIDE limitations.
My only difficulty with the machine has been connecting an old serial laser printer to the device. I had to put the printer on the network for it to connect. Not a huge problem, but one that people should be aware of.
The online help/manual is quite nice, but not very handy if you are a "open up your machine" type of person.
The system (9.0.4) is fairly stable, and I only have serious crashes when AOL Instant Messenger decides to crash the G4. Everything else is wonderful, barring the occasional Microsoft IE crash from overloading it.
OS X appears to fix most of the problems with memory management (usually the cause of aforementioned crashes) but it isn’t currently on the market (Est. Dec 2000 now)
Anyway, regardless of age, my G4 will always be a memo of the design stylings of 1999 and will therefore be a permanent fixture in my house, even if the monitor becomes a fishbowl in the year 2018.
If you don’t have one of these yet, you should get one. If you aren’t going to get one, well, there’s always beige.
