Well no card could ever get 600 frames per second but it got your attention right?.....good, I will first start off with the juice, what you have all been waiting for. The big question, How is the Voodoo 5 5500? Well, I won't lie, it doesn't crush, Annihilate squash or kill the competition, but what it does do is perform beautifully. I know, I know, all you non 3dfx followers will rant and rave about how the gforce 2 or anything Nvidia, crushes the voodoo 5 in frame rates. but lets face it, when's the last time you were being gunned down by 20 guys in an all out deathmatch, heart pumping, frantically looking for that bigger gun to shove down their throats and while all of this is going on, do you really stop and think "wow they may be kicking my butt, but hey, my card has 15fps more then all 20 off those guys killing me." the answer, probably never!
In my opinion regarding framerates I think Shania Twain says it best when she says "that don't impress me much". What does impress me is Graphics and Stability. Now lets admit it The voodoo 5 has both of those. The graphics especially, when you have the 4x fsaa juiced up no card comes close to its visual quality. Now what about Stability? 3DFX has always been known for running stable, on all games, weather it be the voodoo 2, voodoo3 and now the voodoo 5. Just the other day I was
Running quake 3 with all the visual goodies turned up on full for Q3, and ran the game at some ungodly resolution like 2019x1400 or something like that and the whole game ran smooth. No crashing, no freezing up and no jaggies.
I have owned other cards other then the 3dfx line, matter of fact my first card was a creative labs with the tnt chipset, and nothing but horror stories, waited till new drivers came out no luck. Then the tnt2 came out thought maybe they would have fixed all the bugs from the tnt chipset. Same story, card crashing while playing games, Hardware
problems left and right. Then I decided To go for the voodoo 3. Since then my machine has ran like a dream when it came to games.
Then in November I heard of the voodoo 5, and my mouth just watered hearing all the goodies this card packs. Well 8 months later this huge box, and when I say huge I mean really big box is sitting on my doorstep. I bring it inside, open it up. Only to find tons of styrofome popcorn. Well low and behold at the bottom of this huge box was my
brand new Voodoo 5. When I opened up the box is when I got my first and only complaint about this card. For almost 300 bucks you think you would get bundled software, games or something right? Well how does a mousepad sound? Yeah you probably have the same expression on your face I did.
Well I guess you can't be to picky, I mean I do have 64 megs of ram now, Well the card installation was simple. Started the machine and installed the software from the cd and then when that was done, you guessed it. I set the FSAA at 4x, popped Unreal Tournamentin the CDrom. Now when I jumped into the map the only thought in my mind was WOW,
until I was blown to pieces by a rocket launcher. So I exited UT and put something in a bit easier, Jane's US Airforce, and again the graphics with the FSAA was magnificent and the game ran smooth as ever. This is a great card, and if 3DFX stands by there history the card will only get better with new drivers.
Final thoughts, the card is great. For the true gamer, a must have. The pricetag of $300 bucks may be a bit steep, but if you have the money, I say go for it. You won't regret it. If your still a non believer, go check out Artic00cat review of the Voodoo 5. He may not admit it but he at one time was a true Nvidia follower until I introduced
to the 3DFX line, and now as he says "I think I'm in love" and so am I.
