I received the Philips CD-RW drive for Christmas as a gift, and I couldn't be happier with it! The quality is excellent, the software installation was flawless and it works beautifully.
I've used a few different CD-RWs over the years and have had success with most. The Philips seems to be well constructed and very quiet. The true test of any CD drive (whether CD-RW or a standard CD-ROM) is - Does it draw attention to itself in any way? This drive does not, it simply does what it's supposed to - nothing more.
I installed the drive on an AMD K6/2 500 with a Windows 2000 Server operating system. I simply installed the drive in my PC, started the machine up, re-booted when Windows detected the "new device", installed the Adaptec software, re-booted again, and that was it - a perfect installation and setup.
This is certainly one of the few times I can say this about any piece of computer equipment - especially since I'm running Windows 2000 with IIS and SQL server on the machine I installed the CD-RW drive in!
I used both the Easy CD Creator software and the DirectCD software - both packages worked very well - some software is better, but the included bundle is certainly good enough for most people - I'm actually going to use it right out of the box.
I did run into one issue, but I'm sure it's related to my machine and not the CD-RW drive. I ran into a buffer error when trying to burn a CD at 8x. It worked perfectly at 4x and slower, but not at 8x. Your memory, hard-drive speed and IDE interfaces all need to be fast to get the full 8x write capability from this drive - IDE/66 at least with a good amount of system memory available and a good IDE/66 7200RPM hard drive should do the trick. My system is lacking in this area right now.
All-in-all, a quality, affordable product that I definitely recommend to anyone.
