I find I must modify and soften my original evaluation of this device. Since my initial experience I've gotten responses from Lacie and from Roxio, the folks who now produce Toast software. In short, the unit is still loud, but the problem with multi-tasking is a software issue and not a problem with Lacie's device. Read on for details.
My original review criticized the sales staff at Computerware for not knowing the limitations of the products they sell but I find that this was quite unfair. It took me six calls to different tech support, sales and customer service departments and three emails,
only one of which has yet been answered to determine the subtle truth.
I had originally wanted to purchase a QPS 12x10x32 burner because of opinions I'd read on this site and a Macworld review. They all had good things to say about the unit and universally condemned QPS customer and tech support. The thing that interested me was that the unit was reported to support Burn-Proof technology which allows one to multi-task, to continue to work on the computer while a burn is in progress.
I was told by the salesperson at Computerware that they'd had a number of returns with the QPS unit and the Lacie "...seems to stay sold." They used the in the store and were quite happy.
I asked if the Lacie incorporated Burnproof technology which, as I said, allows you to burn in the background and keep using your computer. The helpful salesperson assured me that the Lacie, indeed included Burn-proof. Getting the unit home I found that under no circumstances would it allow any other activity while a burn was in progress. The I spoke with Sales, Customer Service and Tech Support at Lacie and they all assured me that the unit supports Burn-proof. The tech confessed that he'd never been able to get it to work.
Over the course of two days of calling and writhing emails I learned two things:
1) QPS has no customer service or support staff that I could identify. They never returned my calls.
2) While the Lacie unit and a few others available today support Burn-Proof technology, Toast, the burning software shipped with all of these units for the Macintosh, does not support multi-tasking, regardless of the unit you are using.
I earlier reported that the unit is noisy and the fan is still loud and remarkably irritating. But if I only turn on the unit for a burn I can live with it. So far it's performance has been flawless.
