| orion522's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Color LaserJet 4500 Printer |
Everyone has high expectations of Hewlett Packard and let me tell you something, this printer holds those expectations better than any other color laserjet that I've seen. Compared with other lasers of this price-range (between about 2400.00 and 3200.00), the LaserJet 4500 has a faster warmup time and a very fast print speed. With a full page of color graphics or photos, this printer can spit out around 4 pages per minute, but when it's just plain text, this printer basically throws the paper at you at about 16 pages per minute.
Now for quality. All I can say to summarize is WOW! Obviously since it's a laser printer, the black text it prints out is just fabulous. Even with the high speed, letters come out sharp and perfectly defined.
Color printing is awesome too. This printer makes color projects look like you printed them on one of those ten thousand dollar Kinko's printers. Charts, graphs, clip-art, photos, whatever! They all come out looking incredible.
Now you may be thinking how this printer could handle things like photos and high quality graphics. Well with the standard package, you get 32 MB of 100 MHz memory, which is plenty for most people, but if not don't worry, the 4500 has room for upgrades (currently the one I use at work has 96 MB of memory). You can also get a JetDirect network adapter so that the printer can be it's own entity on a LAN (you can also purchase the 4500N printer that is the same thing but with the network card already installed).
If you're a member of a mid-sized business that can afford a nice laserjet printer like this, then I suggest you don't waste any time in getting it. However, please be aware that the toner cartridges (and the printer itself) are rather expensive. A black toner is around 90.00 and each individual color (cyan, magenta, yellow) are around 130.00. So it does take a bit to keep up, but unless the printer is pushing 1000 pages a day, you probably won't be changing the toner much.
