| three_ster's Full Review: ICQ |
After being involved in computers for about a year, I came across this program that everyone I knew seemed to have. They called it "ICQ", and when I first heard of it, I thought it was some method, or game that tested how smart a person is or something like that. But, I was quickly laughed at, as I was the only one who didn't know what ICQ was. Soon after I did learn what it was and what I could do with it though.
ICQ is a program that you download on to your computer from www.icq.com. It is a program that is set up to chat with other people that use the internet. You come up with a screen name, and then the people at ICQ assign you with an adjacent ICQ number. (Mine is 22557252 if anyone would like to add me to their list). And what it allows you to do is chat with other people that are online at the same time. It allows you to also edit the text, font, color, and size of the text of the messages that you are typing as well.
What this system does, is to allow people to send messages, which then appear on your list, as a flashing yellow paper. You can then answer them at you whim. It also allows you to set up a room where you can do one-on-one chatting, or have many people in that same room to chat. Using the program, there are various "modes" that you can be set up with as well. You can be "online": everyone on your list can see and talk to you, "free for chat": which puts you on a list for random people to just come and chat with you, "invisible" which allows you to only be seen online by those people who you send a message to, "offline" which explains itself, "Not Available":, which means you are on your computer but don't wish to talk, or "temporarily unavailable": for those instances where you need to use the restroom.
I am really hooked on this program, and it has one of my most favorite faetures of any of the "chat" programs out there: A History. Which allows you to see what you have talked about in past conversations with people.
I highly recommend this as a program to either keep in touch with family, close friends, or to simply strike up new long-distance friendships.
