Dell Latitudes Rock!

This epinion is about my Dell Latitude laptop. It isn't a new one, it isn't the fastest, it doesn't have the most RAM, the biggest hard drive, or the biggest/brightest screen. But it rocks.

My Dell is a Latitude CPi, with a Pentium 233MHz, 128Mb RAM, 4.5Gb disk, and 12" screen. I bought it new in September of 1998, so it is almost 2 years old. I have used it every day since then, for a minimum of 4 or 5 hours a day, usually quite a bit more (like 14 or 16 hours). It currently has over 50,000 air miles on it.

I chose this laptop because in 1998, it had won the torture test for 5 years in a row. The torture test is a test for laptops done by one of the big PC magazines. They pour liquids on the keyboard. They leave the laptop in the sun. They sit on it. They drop it. They heat it up. They cool it down. When they're all finished beating on the laptops, they figure out which one is still up and running.

I'm a power user. I use my laptop for everything, and I carry it wherever I go. It is my main workstation at work (thanks to the Dell C/Dock port replicator) and my primary system for school. For the first year I had it, I was dual booting Win98 and RedHat Linux, with no problems whatsoever. Then I got tired of Win98, and reformatted the harddrive and put Win2000 Pro on it (I also removed Redhat at the same time). I've played games on this laptop, I listen to music on it, and I've watched many a movie trailer.

In the 2 years that I have had it, I have never had a problem. Not a single one. It has booted every single time I've turned it on, and the few times it has crashed, it was because of the Microsoft OS, not the hardware. When I travel, I put an extra battery into the CD-ROM slot and I can go for 5-6 hours easy, more than enough for the flight to San Francisco from the east coast or the midwest.

Some other things this laptop has going for it (even more reasons why I chose it): fully loaded, with a single battery and the CD-ROM drive, it comes in at just under 6 pounds. On a single battery, I can run about 3 hours. It's light, yet powerful, my shoulder doesn't hurt when I have to schlep it all the way to C concourse at Detroit Metro Airport.

I can't say enough good things about this laptop. I am very glad I bought it, and it has been one of the best purchases I have ever made. I liked it so much that I forced my company to standardize on Dell laptops (instead of Gateways or IBMs) and we have never looked back. After much pressure, 2 of my friends bought Latitudes, and they also have had zero problems.

Dell laptops rock, especially the Latitude series. Next year, I'll probably buy a new one, and you can bet the only models I'll be looking at are the Dells (though maybe I will splurge and buy the Inspiron so I can watch DVDs).
