When I lived in Pittsburgh, one of the biggest local Internet providers (aside from AOL) was Stargate. Not only were they one of the largest, but also one of the most popular. And for good reason. I was a subscriber to their service for 2 trouble-free years, and if I hadn't moved, I'd still be a subscriber.
Stargate is a home and business ISP that provides dial-up, DSL, and high-speed leased lines (T1, T3) for businesses. I signed up with them because I was sick of being dropped by my then-current provider, sick of busy signals, and sick of waiting around forever to connect. Switching to Stargate was like night and day. Setup was absolutely painless, and done over the Web. They will walk you through exactly how to set up your Internet account, in case you're not sure how. Their basic dial-up service was about $20 a month, which is about the norm for this class of connection. With their basic dial-up service, you also got free E-mail, but since everyone offers this, that's no big thing.
The big thing was the service. In the 2 years I subscribed to them, I never once got kicked off, never once got a busy signal, and never once had to wait to get online. They were in a constant state of upgrading, always improving their equipment to meet the demands of thier rapidly-growing customer base. THat means nobody's ever left out in the cold.
The few rare instances I had to contact customer service, the staff was helpful and friendly, and never had any trouble figuring out what the problem was.
All in all, if you're in the Western PA/east Ohio/West Virginia area, you should sign up with Stargate. Don't even consider anyone else.
