| Eric_C's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 7500 G600VT |
I recently purchased this Dell Inspiron 7500 with the following options:
600MHz Pentium III
15" Super XGA+ screen
128MB SDRAM (on 2 DIMMS)
6GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive
56K Internal Voice/Data/Fax Modem
32X CD-ROM/Floppy Combo
2X AGP 8MB ATI Rage Mobility 3D Video Card
Windows 98 Second Edition
MS Office 2000 Small Business Edition
Norton Antivirus 2000
... and I haven't stopped loving it yet. Prior to this I had a four year old NEC Versa 2000 laptop, with a tiny screen and no CD-ROM drive, so part of my love affair with my new Dell is relative to what I used to deal with on the road.
The system is a bit on the heavy side (check the Dell website for exact weights), but for the power and size of the screen, I don't mind the couple of extra pounds.
The keyboard is full-size, comfortable to use, and actually improves my typing speed (which was already speedy). It is also extremely quiet and light to the touch. (Some people may dislike that fact, but I think it is definitely a plus).
I inserted my own network card, put DSL on my old Dell Desktop system, and use my laptop for EVERYTHING now. I even do CAD design using VectorWorks, Photoshop and web design work on the laptop, and prefer it over my slightly larger desktop screen.
The ATI Rage Mobility video card also allows the external monitor to act as a second screen. Doubling your desktop space for a second application to run in windows next to the laptop's screen!
As a small business user Dell's Next Business Day On-Site and CompleteCare Service warranty covers the computer for 3 years from regular wear and tear as well as the epic story of the spilled coffee in the keyboard (yikes!).
I was impressed to discover (it wasn't listed on Dell's website description of the computer). That the laptop has a built in microphone in the center just under the screen. My only complaint about it is its tendency to pickup the hard drive noise as well.
Since the 56K modem has voice capability, I am a little surprised there isn't a voice mail software package, or telephone utility shipped as part of the third-part software that is preloaded.
