Dear computer users,
Dell's inspiron is a very good machine for anyone who needs a powerful station with portability. It really is more of a desktop that you can carry for a short period of time rather than one of those slim laptops you carry around to do word processing. I selected the machine based on its speed, large display and included hardware such as ATI video card (large memory, allows additional monitor an TV hookup), DVD drive, etc. I was able to do movie editing (splicing, recoding, compression...) faster than on some desktops with similar "stats". Image editing was a breeze too, even when large and high-res work was done. In addition, I did plenty of programming in C++ and Java running Visual Age and Microsoft Visual studio. This machine does not choke even under such demanding conditions. So, if you want performance - Inspiron will give it to you. And the large panel display is beautiful and sharp replacing a 17 inch monitor. If you need you can hook up a 1600x1200 monitor IN ADDITION for plenty of desktop space.
The drawbacks are - poor aesthetics and serious gravitational pull. Even for a strong young guy like me carrying the laptop to the car and back is quite a workout. I can't imagine carrying it every day on a subway, especially if a couple reports add to the weight. I guess, one can get used to this too.
Inspiron looks nice when open but when closed the large panel on top of rectangular body is quite unsightly and will not be liked by people used to Sony VAIO and Powerbook G3 sleek lines. But for an average techie it's OK.
The worst thing is the hinges on the laptop. They break after a few months and the laptop does not close and lock. but Dell recognizes this design flaw and repairs it under warranty.
Good luck. Laptop is the way to go.
