Blogger is a free, web-based tool which allows you to update your site- the simple way. Whether it's for your What's New column, a weblog or even a journal, Blogger is the easiest, most convenient way to update your website. No longer will your visitors suffer lack of updates, and no longer will you have to go through the bother of coding tons of HTML again and again to keep up with the pace of the internet. Blogger has become immensely popular, having already reached 60,000 members in a little more than a year. Other services like blogger are diaryland.com, pitas.com and scribble.nu but I prefer blogger.
Getting Started
First and foremost, setting up a blog requires FTP access. If your webserver does not support FTP, you don't your own webspace, you don't want to give Blogger your FTP password, or whatever the reason, you can always sign up at blogspot.com for free or blogphiles.com for $2/month. The former, BlogSpot, is maintained by Blogger itself so I'd recommend that. It does, however, have a banner ad stuck onto its pages. If you don't want that, there's always your original webpage. Sign up for an account at Blogger and click on the create on the "create new blog" link on the right and enter your information. You are now officially on your way!
Posting to your Blog
So you're finally through with the formalities and want to start writing to your blog? Fine! Login to the blog and you will see the page divided into two. The top part is where you type in all the stuff. Simple HTML coding is allowed and if you don't know HTML, there are buttons to make the code for links and bold or italic text. When you're done, click the post & publish button and the blogger software will create a page containing all the new text (and previous text, if any) and upload it to your site- all through the browser, you don't have to do anything more.
Templates
The template, mainly made with BloggerTags, is the layout of your blog. There are four ready-made templates which you can use and, if you don't want to, you can create your own. BloggerTags are very much like HTML and you can insert the author's nickname, email, the date etc. where ever you want it to be. HTML can also be used between the blogger tags.
Archives
You can archive the previous months' posts by going to the archive section amd clicking "archive now". Archives can be deleted by click the "remove from index" link.
Teams
If you want other people to post to your blog as well, this is possible. You can add as many team members as you wish by clicking the Team link in the top navigation bar and then the add team members link.
Linking Back
Since Blogger is free it is supported mostly by publicity and banner ads on the BlogSpot Blogs. All blogs are requested to add a (cute) button linking to the Blogger site on their pages. However, if this spoils the look of your site, a simple text link will do.
