Building your own computer.Dec 31 '00 Write an essay on this topic. There are contrasting opinions on why or why not people should build their own computers. My opinion is this: Build your own, if you do not know how, find someone to build one for you. My opinion stems from several things. The first one is I have been building computers for over 7 years, since I am 21, that's since I was 14 for the lazy types who do not like math (including me). Granted personal computers have gone down in price and you could probably find a cheap computer out there for less than it would cost to build that EXACT one. The reason for this is simple. Companies are not in the business of providing people with good quality computers because I well made system will last you for years (with simple upgrades). It makes more sense for a company to sell you a computer that is almost outdated now, knowing you will need another one soon, so finding a cheap computer is easy. The issue here is this, the price difference between a custom computer and a pre-built one is marginal. The main reasons for building your own computers is that you have all control of what goes inside and know exactly what you are putting into it. While to some people who do not want to deal with that will spend insane amounts of money on "cutting edge" computers even though they can get a better system built for less. I have a HUGE problem with companies like Gateway, Compaq, Dell etc... because in my opinion I think they rip people off like crazy. I will list for you a computer I built 4 days ago for a friend and the price of that computer and you can yourself compare. 1. AMD Duron 800 Mhz -- $90 2. ABit KT-133 Motherboard -- $120 3. 128 MB PC-133 SDRAM --$41 4. Maxtor 30.7 GB Hard Drive -- $100 5. Voodoo3 3000 16 MB AGP Video Card -- $100 6. Computer Case (black)-- $70 7. 16 bit sound card -- $20 8. Speakers -- $20 9. 56k Modem -- $40 10. Keyboard -- $20 11. Mouse -- $15 12. 17" Monitor -- $200 13. 52X CD-ROM -- $50 Total Price -- $886 + tax and shipping == $900 Now people will say that some parts in there are cheap (sound card comes to mind) but here is why there is only a 20 dollar sound card. The computer will NOT be used for games, or Music, or almost any application that NEEDS a $100 sound card, so why waste money. The sound IS DirectX compliant and it WILL play any game out there without a problem, minus the 3-D sound etc... Next the Video card is not the Top of the line card etc... (see above point). I think the Voodoo3 3000 is one of the best made video cards EVER which is why I put it in here. This system will play anything that you throw at it. The 800 Mhz Duron makes sure of that. This system you could not buy in a Store because they will not sell it. Not many companies sell AMD Durons, which are VERY good CPU's and can beat Celerons, and P2 and most P3 in speed tests. I have tested this and seen it. I will not go into any more details of the above computer because I think it will probably bore you so I will make my final statement. Please do not buy a premade computer, you're the only one losing. Granted people will be enticed by computer makers to buy systems with tons of software pre-installed and the worry-free nature of warranties etc... but you will still get ripped off. I will help anyone out there wanting to build their own computer via Email. If you have a question, or what to put into a computer etc, just Email me at lordarathres@hotmail.com. I will NEVER charge you or ask for money etc... I am not a business, just a computer user who see's way too many people ripped off including myself when I first started in computers. Good luck to you all. Later Arathres |
