PC Gaming for Beginners

Apr 24 '00

Confused between Diamond and 3DFX? Don't know PCI from AGP? Well, I'm here to help. For starters, a true PC gamer will always want the best he/she can get. But there is a lot of products out there.

When buying a computer for gamers, it you must be careful in what you get. Buy the wrong product, and you are stuck with a jerky game that runs about as fast as a snail. The first, most important thing when buying the ultimate gaming PC is the CPU (Central Processing Unit or porocessor). The Pentium III and Celeron processors from Intel are the best. The Cyrix and AMD processors have a tendancy to freeze up. When buying a processor, your best bet is a Pentium III 500 megahertz and above. But if you are stressed for money, a Celeron 450 or 500 can be just enough.

The second thing is RAM, or Random Access Memory. You should have at least 125 megabytes of it, but be careful about what type you buy. You should buy Rambus (RDRAM), but that is really expensive right now and is not that readily available. For something cheaper, but not quite as good, SDRAM is a good choice.

Third is the video card. If you are a true PC gamer (of which I have no doubts), then you will want the best the market has to offer. There are two major types of video card: PCI and AGP. AGP is better because the slot that the card fits in has a much faster transfer rate than a PCI slot. So that means that the card will be better.
