Epson 1270: Ink jet prints getting more archival

Written: Mar 22 '00
Pros:Good prints and probably better archival
Cons:matte paper gets too wet

Last Friday I finally got one of the first Epson 1270 printers in San Jose available. It is only a very brief period and a few prints I could check on this product.

For my photographic reference have a look at my galleries at www.photodotcom.com.

But I own an Epson 600 and 900 and think there quality was pretty good. The main reason to add the 1270 was first the greater size but even more important the better claimed longevity of the prints. This is not just a claim by Epson it is stated by the well known Wilhelm Imaging Research

It says that photos on the Epson heavyweight matte paper with the new inks should last more than 20 year. Now I would not be afraid to sell even inkjet prints.

Installation on NT4.0 was very easy as I expected by my experience with the other Epson printers. I tried prints at about 10x7 ad 15x10 on that heavyweight matte paper. See: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=243426&a=2045839&p=17029480&Sequence=0. The quality was very good and looked very close to my calibrated monitor image. I used the sRGB setting in Photoshop to print. This might not even be the most optimal way to go.

Nice is a new feature to preview the photos before you decide to print them.

There is one thing which concerned me a bit. The matte paper got pretty wet and left some visible warps on the back. Using the 720dpi resolution for this paper at print time made it a bit less apparent. Also it looked like it uses a lot of ink but that can be said only for sure as I am done with the first cartridge. Some one on the net said that some ink is put into a kind of depot. I will watch for it.
