| popkorn1's Full Review: Be OS |
As some of you may know, Be Inc. just decided to release their excellent multimedia OS for free at http://be.com. Personally, I've been waiting for this release for months, and I was thrilled on March 31, 2000.. when the system was released for free.
BeOS, dubbed the Media OS, is an excellent new operating system that pushes your computer to it's limits. Unlike Windows, BeOS boots up in only about 5 to 7 seconds, max. Your then welcomed with a beautiful GUI (Graphical User Interface) with blue gold and grey colors. It is definiately eye pleasing.
BeOS is dubbed the Media OS because it is basically based to get the most out of your computer's hardware, allowing excellent performance. MP3 play in BeOS is unbeatable. The sound editing tools available for BeOS are excellent.
Installation of this OS is a breeze. Why? Because, Be was very smart to figure that not many people will want to replace their Windows system with theire new "little guy". So the way it is installed is you download a 43 meg executable file onto your Windows desktop, and double click it to install. BeOS will automatically create a 500 Meg file in a BeOS folder on your hard drive. (Don't worry, you don't have to do anything to set this up, it's all automated) This file works similarly to a separate hard drive... all of BeOS and your BeOS programs will be held in this file.
At any rate, Windows creates a "Start BeOS" icon on your Windows desktop, and when you double click it, your system will exit Windows and boot straight into BeOS. Then, when you want to go back to windows, just select "Restart" from the BeOS menu... and Boom, you're back in Windows.
And as if installing BeOS couldn't get any easier, there is very little need to set up any hardware at all. Why? Because BeOS Automatically detects it for you. The very first time you load BeOS, you should see beautiful color and hear a welcome sound.. and it will even see your network card if you have one.. and in no time, you'll be on the internet in BeOS.
There were a couple problems for me, personally. For one, my video card is unsupported, so when I booted BeOS I got an ugly black and white screen. If you get that problem, just hit the space bar during bootup for a "startup menu" and you can select a higher screen resolution and color depth. E-mail me and I'll tell you how to make this permanent...
All in all, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND any avid computer user to give BeOS a try. Software for this system is appearing everywhere. The free release is getting it around worldwide, so it will soon be no stranger to the OS world. For software, check out the be.com site, or bebits.com.
If you have any questions about BeOS, please feel free to e-mail me. And if you have any problems with setting it up, e-mail me and I'll try and help you work things out. (I recommend making the BeOS boot disk if you have problems...)
Anyway, Go for BeOS! ... Where do you want to BE today?
