| Cornell2000's Full Review: IBM PC Camera Webcam |
While this product does what its advertising indicates, it is not really that useful because there are many superior cameras available now. I think the image quality is OK, but often times there are a lot of little dots that make the image look like it was made by a hand scanner.
It is easy to install the camera on both Windows 98 and Windows 2000, but I think it works better under Windows 98. You need to remember to install the software program from the CD-ROM first, then restart your computer, and finally connect the camera to your computer. If you connect the camera before you install the software you will have lots of problems.
The software is easy to use, some have a non-standard interface which I don't like. There are two major programs that work the camera, IBMPcCamera (why it has this weirdly-capitalized name I don't know) and IBM Album. There are also several image enhancement programs that come with the camera on a CD-ROM along with Microsoft Netmeeting (which you could download for free anyway). Windows programs are all supposed to use standard buttons, menus, and icons, but the IBM software designers thought it would be neat to have all sorts of soft-looking 3-D buttons on their program. Good features and additional options have been sacrificed in an effort to make the software look cutesy.
Overall I would not recommend making this purchase. You would be wise to do some research on the Internet or in computer magazines as there are articles that rank various cameras. While you might have to spend a little bit more money, you will get a lot more quality.
