| navinthebean's Full Review: Cute FTP |
When I first began designing webpages, I used to upload the files through my browser. It was slow and painful. I could usually upload only 1-5 files at a time depending on where my site was located and I used to get a lot of errors. It all changed when I found CuteFTP.
I first started out with FTP (File Transfer Protocol) using CuteFTP and have been using it for two years so far. Now I find that I don't feel comfortable with any other FTP program (e.g. wsFTP). CuteFTP is very easy to use and even a beginner will have no problem. The interface is very good as well. Don't be turned off by the name- this program lets you do just about everything that can be done with FTP. I have used CuteFTP on Windows 2000, 98 and NT and have had no problems, other than the occasional crash.
When you open the program, you see the Site Manager. There is a list of predefined public upload/download sites and you can also add your own. CuteFTP's Site Manager allows you to connect to your FTP server at ease- You can store all your FTP info and don't have to type it over and over again each time you connect. If you're upgrading your version, you just have to save the tree.dat file and your FTP info folders won't get lost.
The screen is divided into fours rows. The top part is where the log is. It shows you when you connected, whether the login was successful or not, what you uploaded or downloaded etc. The second part is divided into two columns: the left column is your local directory with all your files and you can select the file and upload it from there or just drag and drop it. You can also delete a local file straight from CuteFTP itself. The column on the right is the directory on the web. You can select a file or more and change permissions, move, delete or rename them. You can also create new folders and move entire folders without having to move each file individually.
One of the things that bother me is that when I'm downloading something off the web and I have CuteFTP on at the same time, it usually downloads from there. I mean, hey, I want the file to download through my browser, I didn't tell CuteFTP to do it! (Sorry, just a pet peeve)
CuteFTP's features include (but are not limited to) MP3 and file searching, resuming uploads and downloads, queued uploading and downloading, logs, firewall support and windows explorer integration. You can upload in ASCII or Binary or use the auto-detect function, which will identify the file type on its own and then upload accordingly. Renaming, deleting and moving files and directories is also possible.
You can buy CuteFTP, the world's leading FTP client, for $39.95 or you can download a trial version from their website for free. This will last you for 30 days with ads (can get annoying). After 30 days have elapsed, some of the more useful functions/shortcuts are disabled but you can still upload files.
