The model I bought was an HP 9340i which went for $259 + tax. This
particular model was one of the fastest writers out there: 10x write, 4x rewrite, 32x read.
I use it mostly to make backup copies of software or music albums. I can record up to 650 megabytes of data (about 1.2 gigabytes compressed) or up to 74 minutes of audio. It will write an entire CD in about 8 minutes. With backups created using HP Disaster Recovery software it's quick and simple to restore my entire computer system.
I really like the whole package. I am able to use any brand of CD-R and CD-RW media on the drive. It came with a bunch of software that allows me to make custom CD labels (stickers). They give you a sample of the special sheets of paper that you just put in your printer when you want to create a new label for a disc.
There is also a utility to create a disc from a "jukebox" which is
simply a name they give to basically making your personal compilation
CD from existing CDs. You can use it as an archival system, or to make an exact replica of an existing disc. The installation instructions were easy and well-written.
The 9340i offers:
- Internal IDE drive with 4 MB buffer
- HP CD creation software
- HP Fast Format software
- HP MusicMatch Jukebox software
- HP Simple Backup software
- CD Labeler
The 9340i and 9350i each offer additional software such as Corel Print Office 2000 and Deluxe Multimedia Organizer.
Included in the box
- 10x4x32x internal IDE CD-Rewriteable drive
- Simple setup and installation instructions
- IDE cable
- Audio cable/screws
- 1 blank CD-R disc
Compatible with CD-R (writable) and CD-RW (rewritable) discs.
One ominous sign is that there is no indication on HP's web site as to whether their new CD-RW drives will be compatible with Windows 2000. I understand they have had some problems in the past with their Officejet Windows 2000 drivers due to "technical issues". If you are a Win 2000 user, you may want to save yourself a head-ache by making sure the drivers are available before purchasing an HP CD-RW product.
