EMachine is Barebones Internet
Feb 16 '00 (Updated Oct 11 '00)
I was looking for a way to access the internet without really getting bogged down in alot of computer gadgets. I first looked at a WebTV. After asking friends that had them, and talking to just people online hearing their horror stories, I decided to get a cheap computer since I wasn't going to use it for much else if anything. Going into Best Buy I happened upon the Emachines.
The system itself is a 300 Mhz processor and 32 MB of RAM. I have since put in a VOODOO 3000, upgraded the memory to 128 MB, and put in a slight sound card so that i can play Diablo 2 and Quake 3 without freezing the screen.
Although I have been disgruntled that it crashes easily, it seems to do just fine for me. I didnt pay alot so I dont expect much. I think that if you are wanting to get a cheap computer this is the way to go. With a WebTV I hear that you can't access alot of different sites (Kinda like AOL- lol) and with the Emachines at least you have the entire web at your disposal.
The only real major gripe I have is that at the time I didnt get alot of memory or harddrive. Now they have Emachines with DVD players and like 30 gig harddrive as opposed to my 2 gig. I live and I learn, but the machine itself is really ok. It came ready to go online with Netcom service. (That i tried and hated, but you may like)
All in all, the Emachines is an ok computer to do most surfing activities, but not for the serious gamer unless you get one of the eMonster ones that they have out now.
