Why to Give CE a Chance
Apr 20 '00
I am not a huge fan of Microsoft Windows. But I feel that Windows CE is probably the best Windows that Microsoft has written. Windows CE is small and stable. I can not say this about many other versions of Windows. Of the two Windows CE devices I have owned, I can not recall having to restart the device due to a Windows lockup.
Until the Palm IIIc, only Windows CE devices were available in color. I believe that color screens are much more readable than their grayscale counterparts. Even if you don't use any color programs, the extra readability is worth getting a color device. If you do go grayscale, make sure you have a back light for dark-room/night usage.
Windows CE Palm-Sized PC's have larger screens than Palm devices. The screen is approximately twice as tall. Almost twice as much information can be fit on one screen. The input method is software-based, and can be hidden when not in use. Another advantage of software input is that new input methods can be installed.
Want a real keyboard? Windows CE Handheld PC's include one built-in. Not to mention that the handheld PC's also include Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Pocket Power Point Viewer, and Pocket Internet Explorer. The extra functionality is almost worth getting a handheld PC. Handheld PC's are available in half-VGA (640x240), VGA (640x480), and SVGA (800x600) screen sizes. Handheld PC's can almost replace a laptop -- their size makes them very portable.
Windows CE devices have always supported CompactFlash cards. If you have a Palm, adding storage is much harder. Windows CE devices can also be purchased with more internal memory.
These are a few of the advantages of Windows CE devices. While we may not like the practices of Microsoft, or other versions of Windows, I feel that you should take a serious look at what Windows CE has to offer.
