I installed this card to improve the sound in a lady friend's PC. I was embarrassed after installing the card, when the card would barely drive her amplified speakers. Since they were a cheap set of speakers, I bought her a new and better set of amplified speakers, but the result was no better.
After re-installing her old sound card, with good results, I installed the Creative card in my PC, thinking that the problem may have been inherent with her PC system. The Creative card worked no better in my system. I had to turn the volume all the way up on my speakers and in the PC and Sound card software to get volume out of the speakers that was barely adequate.
I contacted Creative via email, and got a response requesting more information about my system, and have since had two more queries from Creative's tech rep, at about one month intervals, about my speakers, with the admonition that I had to have amplified speakers. I have given him the information about my amplified speakers twice, the last time on August 4th. I have not heard from him since then.
I have recently installed the PCI514 in a new PC that I put together and it works no better in this one either. It's a lemon. It's probably to be expected that mass produced products will occasionally have defects. I did expect better support from Creative, however, and so far that has not been forthcoming. Ironically, the reason I chose the Creative card in the first place was because of the excellent quality of the Creative Soundblaster SB16 ISA card I have used for about 5 years, and still use in my old PC.
