Windows 98 SE & Networking

May 16 '00

Windows 98 SE can share its Internet connection

Yes, with win 98 you can run an in home network. You kids and you can share the Internet, email and all the other Internet services. All you need is a couple of Ethernet cards and a hub. One key is to use the NetBEUI and TCPIP protocols with the windows login.

How TO DO IT

This can be found under START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> NETWORK (icon). Once there the ACCESS LEVEL (tab) should be share-level access control, CONFIGURATION (tab) drop down box to windows logon, Then click the ADD button -> (new window) select protocol -> click the add button -> select Microsoft (on the left)|| (on the right scroll down to NetBEUI and select it. Do the same for TCPIP.

Why and How is it working

What Net BEUI does is continuously send out your resources to the other networked computers. The problem I had was the TCPIP does not now it has company on the network and there for it thinks it’s alone. A server would issue commands to the other computers and every NODE would know about the others on the network. With out the server NetBEUI is the informer that gets the ball rolling. One other thing the Windows 98 SE computer is the only one that should have it's IP address assigned leave the other computers with out one the win98 computer will assign them one. It acts like a proxy server for the Internet. You can also map a shared section of another computer's drive to any drive letter you want. Printers can also be shared.

I have done this at my second job as a Unix/network administrator. We have Three computers networked. One Win98 SE, and two win95 computers. They share the Internet and two printers. I did have to install the drivers for the printer. The Internet sharing can be done The Internet icon off of the settings window. The windows built in help system was a big help. It didn't hurt to have a network guy (George) in my corner. I hope you enjoy the abilities that a network provides. One final note use cat 5 cable and don't bend it.

About the network cards

It does not realy matter much which network cards you buy. Things to consider: 1. DO drivers come with it for your operating system.
2. Do you recognize the brand ie. 3com
3. Is it auto switching 10/100 bps.
4. Will it take cat 5 cable with the connector that is a little bigger than a phone jack RJ-11.
5. Are you willing to investigate eneough to get your home network up and running (time).

Happy Networking Joe GAC
