Recently there has been a real fallout in the Free ISP service game. One of those that discontinued service was WebFlyer, which offered excellent service with a very small ad banner. This nearly identical service powered by GluOn is now available through American Express Online (amexol.com). There is one hitch however; you have to be an AMEX cardholder to get this free service. I was not an AMEX cardholder at the time I had heard about this service but applied for the AMEX Blue Card that has no annual fee. I received the card in less than a week, downloaded the software (less than 3-meg. download) and was online in minutes. The connection speeds are always near 50,000 BPS and the quality of connections seems first rate. The small banner, that can be moved anywhere, is about 1/4th the size of most FreeISP competitors banners and it goes away when you type from the keyboard or click on anything with your mouse. You can also get a free POP Email address with signup and there appears to be good nationwide coverage of local dial-up numbers. I am hopeful that the strength of a big name like AMEX and the fact that this is a service for cardholders will keep this Free ISP around for a long time. WebFlyer was a great service and I am thrilled that the same quality service is now available through AMEX Online.
