My top five

Sep 17 '00

Number one would have to Macromedia Freehand. I've been a designer for over 10 years and everything I do starts here. Whether it is a trail map for a major ski resort, a 36-foot real estate sign or a web site interface. If I start in freehand I can always get what I've done into a format that the final production people need. The one feature I just love is the multiple page layouts on a single pasteboard. It’s the metaphor that most closely resembles an actual past up board.

I've used every other illustration package Illustrator CorelDraw, Canvas but they all fall short of the tool set and versatility of freehand

My number 2 would have to be Adobe Photoshop this is simply the best photo-editing tool for print production but don't try to use it for web graphic that brings me to my number three

Macromedia Fireworks built from the ground up for web graphics. Using vector-editing tools to edit png files is just a combo that you can't beat

My number 4 would have to be Adobe Acrobat. It is the tool that has made working remotely possible. To take what I've done in any program save it as a pdf then email it to a client has made my work a dream. I love sending an invoice this way no paper, no stamp and no delay.

My number five would have to be Flash5 there isn't enough space here for me to go into how much I love using Flash

Other programs not in my top five but are essential to every graphic artist: Quark of course and Macromedia Dreamweaver a truly elegant way to make web pages with it's seamless integration with Fireworks

A couple apps that I would advise every graphic designers to stay away from: Page maker is just old technology if you're just planning on sending your designs to your desktop laser printer it's fine but any service bureau will tell you that PageMaker just sucks. Stick to quark and save every body the problems I have worked with Adobe InDesign and really like it but I’m waiting for version 2.0 before I do anything major with it. I would really like to see it retire Quark, which is definitely showing signs of aging. Also stay away from anything by Corel this stuff is strictly for the hobbyist if you plan on making money with your designs steer clear of Corel aps.
