Computers for dummies

Jan 19 '00 (Updated Apr 07 '00)

I'm not exactly what you would call the most knowledgeable person when it comes to computers, but there are a few things I have picked up along the way.

First, if your going to get a computer that you want to be "the best out there", here is a reality check. You may get something today that's one bad-ass system. But in a few months, they will be half the price, and commonplace all over, with computers almost twice as fast out there.

So with that in mind, get a computer that you can build on in the future. Add upgrades as needed, or just install better equipment down the road. In a year or two, what do you think is cheaper, a whole new computer, or maybe an upgrades processor and some more RAM (possibly a hard drive too)? Next, building your own computer does have advantages. It's cheaper, you get what you want, you know what you have, and you know what you can do with it now and in the future. It's just an all around smarter thing, BUT you need to know what's going on. Knowledge is a must with this.

Next, despite a common misconception your computer may not be as fast as you think it should be even with a "fast" processor. Just because you think the computer is slow you don't always have to buy a new processor. First think about how much RAM you have. Your computer could be slow because it doesn't have enough RAM to do what you want. That should be your first upgrade. Now if you're a serious gamer, then you want a quick processor or graphics card. Otherwise, stick with upgraded RAM.

Last, be smart. Shop around, know what your looking for and what you need. Dont get suckered by stupid promos like buy a $4000 piece of cr@p, get a free 15" monitor. You can get a monitor for $100 or $200 these days and don't pay attention to those free computers. They say you get a free computer but you spend more money paying for the internet service for four years.
