Notepad is awesome. I use it to edit and grab HTML source code. If you try doing it Word, it noremally does all sorts of formatting junk to it, and you don't end up getting a webpage. (Well, the way you designed it, at least.)
There are a lot of times when I need to edit raw text and I don't want to be bogged down by the clock-cycle sucking behemoth that is Microsoft Word whatever, or WordPad. Notepad does whatever I need to do nicely, and efficiently.
In fact, we use Notepad here at work when we're troubleshooting credit card readers and hand scanners. Swipe the card through, and if the information pops up in Notepad, then you know you're getting it properly. A lot of times swiping it through in Wordpad will end up misdiagnosing the problem because Wordpad isn't just dumping the raw text like Notepad does.
Notepad is my default word processing tool. I very rarely have any thing that forces me to open up a session of Word or Wordpad, so Notepad is my default when I need to work with any form of text.
On top of all this, the program's essentially free, so you really can't ask too much more out of it for what you paid for it. I mean, you don't even have to download it.
So the next time you have to jot down someone's number or email address don't fire up MS Word, just pop open the Notepad.
