I thought about possibly buying a new CD writer today and stopped myself before I even got the store. I realized that until the day the little green light fizzles and fades away off of my Ricoh drive, will I even consider replacing it.
It's quite obvious that the MP6200S is not even commercially available in stores anymore, but I felt so strongly about the experience I have had with mine that I wanted to write about it anyway. I purchased my Ricoh burner in 1996 for around $550.00. Back then, any SCSI burner was going to cost an arm and a leg. It has now been over four years and I still use my CD burner at least twice a week. I have probably burned over 500 cds since I received my burner of which only about 15 have turned into frisbees.
This drive has been so much more than I have expected. I have replaced my motherboard, my processor, my ram, and 3 hard drives in my pc since 1996 all the while never having a problem with my burner. I have burned cds while playing mp3s, using Microsoft Word, and surfing the net all at the same time, and the cd still comes out perfect. Although a full length cd does take over 30 minutes to burn, I would rather have a reliable slow burner than a fancy shmancy burner that fails 1 out of 3 burns. I have used over 5 different types of burning software and never had a problem with any of them.
I really can't praise Ricoh enough for this drive. I have used just about every type of media in this drive despite warnings from friends, and never had a real problem. The MP6200S even came with its own SCSI card.
So, even though my friends brag about their 8x burners and how they can burn a cd in 7 minutes, I have no problem going home to my PC and burning a cd that I am certain will come out right on "The Ol' Beast".
