THE PLAIN AND SIMPLE TRUTH part 1Dec 23 '99 Write an essay on this topic. So you want to buy a computer, what do you really need? How much do you need to spend? What you need in a pc depends on what you intend to do with it. If you only want to browse the internet and write papers and want a reliable system, look into a refirbished computer such as: 233 mmx pentium/32 megs of ram/ 24x cd-rom drive/ 3 gig hard drive/14'' svga monitor/33.6 or 56 kbs modem. You can get a system like this for around $300 or less. (not cheap enough, read on) You will not need agp graphics or pc100 ram. You do not need a 400+ mhz pc with 64 megs of ram to use the internet!! WHAT EVER YOU DO DON'T GET AN EMACHINES, YOU WILL REGRET IT. I have written a review for the e tower 400, I suggest that you read the facts before you buy an Emachines pc. If you really want a budget machine who's sole purpose is to go online concider this: 166 mmx pentium/32 megs of ram/8x cd-rom drive/1.5 gig hard drive/svga monitor/56k modem. Although 166 mhz seems slow compaired to todays standards its fast enough for the internet. This system will cost you around $200. Add free internet acess from net zero and this system will pay for itself. Don't like the banners on your screen, try CRACKED(tm) Don't get a system with under 32 megs of ram because web browsers and windows 9x are memory intensive, lack of memory will cause your system to bog down. The systems listed above were equipped with intel pentium chips. If you really want cheap let's talk AMD Stay away from cyrix based pcs, although there inexpensive they are just not reliable enough for any PC. If you want a system that will do a little more but won't cost that much more look at this: amd k6/2 300 mhz, 32 megs of ram, 2 gig hard drive, 40x cd-dom drive/56 kbs modem. You could get this system for around $350. I will address gaming pcs in the next review. |
