The Nvidia GeForce256 by Creative Labs is a 32 Mb video card ... For those not familiar with the function of video cards; It's main purpose is to make the objects and pictures you see on the screen clearer and smoother ... By smoother, I mean that if you have an object that runs across the screen it will look realistic ... If you don't have enough memory for graphics, the object can skip, slow down, or stop completely ... The amount of on board memory installed on the GeForce256 allows it to run smooth no matter what game you're playing (in most situations) ... It was brought out to be strong competition for the Voodoo 3 series of graphics cards
The Bitter Side:
It is too powerful for some applications ... also, some games are specifically designed to work best with the Voodoo series of cards ... It wasn't made to be universal, it was made to function at a high level of operation ... Some of the games that I like the most failed to work with the card; such as
. Midtown Madness
. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed
. Unreal (kind of worked, but didn't do a good job)
It's a real disappointment about the driving games, because the card does extremely well on all the other games that I've used it on
The Sweet Side:
The games that it does operate with, it enhances the graphics significantly ... The card helps out if you don't have enough RAM already installed in your computer because it has 32 Mb of its' own to work with ... I have a large monitor, so it's important to me that the picture I do get on the screen is a very good one ... It helped out a lot on such games as these
. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3-D
. Nocturne
. Star Wars: Episode I RACER
. NBA Live 2000
. Pandora's Box
Altogether, this card is definitely worth the investment if you're looking towards the future ... if you already have one, it's only a bummer because not every game has a patch or download to use to make the program function with the card ... the good news is that they're working as fast and hard as they can to make the card more user friendly and compatible with all game types
For anybody that's not an extreme gamer, but really wants better graphics ... I would say get a Voodoo 3, 3000 (either PCI or AGP depending on which kind of slot you have available) ... For the consumer that really likes games, a graphics expert, or anybody looking for graphics that last a long time ... I say buy this card
Thank you for your time and effort ... take care
