| gjax's Full Review: Asus AGP-7700 |
Update:Asus recently released a 7700 Deluxe model. Now the series is complete. I would have prefered it if the model had come out sooner, but it is out, and it has rave reviews. So go and check it out. All the good things I said about this model are still true, and all the negative things no longer apply. Though it is one expensive mother of a card.
Ok I love the GeForce2 chipset. It's great, but I want more than just 3D performance out of my graphics card, which is what I liked about previous ASUS video cards. There was always the deluxe option. There is no 7700 delux and there is no indication on their web site that there will be. As a result to get the built in video capture, use the 3D glasses, and play with all the features that I liked so much about ASUS's previous cards I can't have top of the line. I don't like that. For the first time I am shopping for something top of the line becasue I have the money for it, and I can't get what I want. I don't want to wait, because I need the video capture, but ASUS hasn't given any indication that they are going to offer a deluxe version, so I am forced to go with the older GeForce1.
The good side: This really is a killer card, and as with all ASUS products it is very stable. Their set of bundled software is killer, and all you have to do is look at what their dynamic overclocking does to benchmarks. It is well worth the time. The other thing that is very nice about ASUS is that their card will work with Nvidia's Detanator drivers, which not all cards will. If the company alters the reference board too much then the system will lock up if you use detanator drivers. This is a problem I ran into several times with Diamond's TNT and TNT2 cards. Thankfully this is not a problem with the ASUS card. As a result you can always get the latest greatest implementation of the GeForce card as soon as Nvidia makes it avaliable. This is a big plus with me.
Overall this is a good card if you are just interested in gaming performance. Arguably one of the best on the market. It doesn't have the deluxe options, and it doesn't have the incredibly FSAA that the Voodoo 5 has, but it has the frame rates, more so than anything else on the market, and for a lot of gamers that's all that matters.
