| flindingo's Full Review: Canopus DV Raptor |
Having worked with just about every brand out on the market, I finally made a move for less money than expected to the best quality product available.
Canopus is the master at DV, and video editing hardware in general. The DV Raptor is the entry level card that does it all and more! Not only does this card flawlessly capture DV video you can purchase a version with the FULL Adobe Premiere for CHEAPER than Premiere itself!
The card captures DV (Digital Video through IEEE-1394), and uses a software decoder which usually means slow choppy performance. However Canopus was so ingenious that they made it use the hardware chip on the camcorder, and use it's video outputs to do a full resolution real time Overlay of the video! The card has S-video In, and Out, plus Composite In and Out, (and of course DV In-out).
The Video out in S-video and Composite allows you to plug in a TV or video monitor and view your production straight off that! No other cards come close to these features... and there's more!
Until recently the S-video, and Composite in were just for previewing the video,
and to capture Analog video you needed the DVRex (See my review of that), and $1500 more dollars, but just recently Canopus made a patch program that allows you to capture analog through the S-video and Composite inputs! So you can hook up your VCR, old Camcorder or anything you want for full screen clear video!
All this for less than $700, Canopus is truly a great pioneer in DV editing.
