It wasn't broke but I had to try it.Oct 09 '00 Write an essay on this topic.I too thought the $59.95 for the update was a fair price. I had read the reviews and it seemed there was plenty of good reasons to update. Who doesn't want the latest thing? After the arrival I waited for several days. My old Windows 98 was perking along just fine no crashes or lockups and everything working great. On Saturday I decided it was time to do it. The installation was no problem. Be SURE you save your existing set up !!! When it was done I booted up, the first thing I noticed was the claim of a faster boot was just a claim. It took the same time as 98 to boot. I really liked the new features and look. The whole program seemed smoother and the part to reset your computer to a previous time, well it was super. There was a lot of MS advertising junk but you can just overlook that. I played and tested the rest of the day things seemed fine. When I went on line first I saw that my modem (Supra 56K express) took over two minutes to connect. With W98 it only took 14 seconds. That is hardly a speed up. A driver problem with Windows ME ? Then the bad news I could not open or down load any web pages. I spent 4 hours and dozens of phone calls to my IP, trying everything and nothing worked. They told me many others had the same experience. Sure I could have spent several more hours trying to get help from Microsoft, and maybe the would solve the problem and maybe not. I can tell you for sure the uninstall Windows ME works just as they say. It put everything back just as it was, thank goodness. My recommendation, if your computer is working and thing are going along great, let it alone and enjoy it. There are too many little quirks in ME to mess with even though on the surface it looks good. |
