When you're buying a new computer, formatting your computer, or just want to back up some important stuff, you HAVE to go to the store, and buy something like 40 floppy discs just to back up the important stuff…
Iomega's zip drive is maybe not the newest thing, but even after 2-3 years that its available I still use it all the time. It is a removable drive that connects to your computer, and the floppies that you use in it are 100 MB each!
I'm using those 100 megabytes floppy discs for backup, for everything that is important to me on my computer (and there are lots of things…). My computer crashed last year, and without my backup discs I would have lost so many important things that I wouldn't be able to get back…
The device itself isn't the most comfortable thing, but it's workable. When you want to connect it to your computer, you'll have to disconnect your printer, or you can connect the printer to the Zip drive itself and they'll both work. It sounds complicated, and it really is. This I think is the biggest disadvantage of the Zip drive.
I'm also using the Zip drive to copy games and programs to and from friends. When I go to one of my friends, my Zip drive is always in my bag, just in case I'll need it.
There's also another disadvantage here, that you'll have to install the program to the other computer you are using, including to connect it to the back of the computer instead of the printer, and all of these stuff takes too much time.
The device itself is pretty slow, so you need to be patient when you copy/download things.
The installation of the program is hard to understand. It took me a while until I got what I was supposed to do, and frankly, I didn't enjoy it…
Today I saw the Zip drive for sale for 100$, including 3 floppies (300 MB), and I'm sure you can get it for much less than that. 3 floppies alone are something about 30$, and here again I'm pretty sure you can get it for much less.
If you are going to need to back up your files on the computer, for any reason, I would strongly recommend you to use the Iomega Zip drive for this purpose.
