| Cosine's Full Review: K6-2, 500 MHz (MPN-AMD-K-2/500BOX) Processor |
The K6 line of processor will go down in history as the product which started it all for AMD. They were the first chip to legitimize the idea of owning a cpu from someone other than Intel.
I cannot say enough good things about this chip. I have built several systems around it and continue to do so. As well I have upgrade several machines for friends using the K6-2. For the average computer user the K6-2 does everything they need to at a premium price.
AMD should be commended for using the K6 line to keep an upgrade path open to owners of older socket7 based machines. With the K6 upgrading from a P120 to a K6-2 550mhz can be done with as little as a cpu or cpu and motherboard swap. This is as opposed to the Intel upgrade path which would have you replace the entire machine (case, pwr supply, ram). Each person that I gave the two options to said the same thing "So it would cost me how much just to stick with Intel?". Needless to say they are now proud AMDphiles. Now don't get me wrong here, I like Intel and always have but they just seem to keep shooting themselves in the foot over and over and after a while it becomes time to give the other guy a shot. Luckily for AMD they had a good product in place at a great price, allowing them to fill this gap.
About the only peeve I have with AMD regards their decision not to market the K6-III line to anyone but laptop makers, leaving end users and system builders without the options of this upgraded chip.
