Compaq customer support lacking

While the compaq notebook I purchased was a good buy, (compaq prosignia 150) I found the customer support very un-supportive. This is a description of what I went through, and I'm not saying that this happens all the time. I'm not even saying that this happens frequently, but this is what happened to me.
After buying the notebook and purchasing a 3 year extended warrenty, I used it for approximately three months. One night I shut it down, and when I opened it back up the next day the screen went to a blinking cursor and no farther. After calling tech support I was instructed to be at home the next day so someone could pick the laptop up. I was to have it back within 3 days, in working order. 5 days rolled by with no word, so I called again. I was told the unit was on hold, but not told why. Supposedly the person I talked to did not have that information. After dialing several other numbers I was finally told that the screen was busted, and $972.02 was required to get it fixed. I asked them to send me to a manager, and was told that I would be contacted by them in 2 days. 2 days went by, then 3. I called the man's extension and got no answer every time. Finally 2 days after I was supposed to be contacted, he happened to be in his office when I called. After discussing the situation with him, we found that the shipping company was at fault, and the laptop would be back to me within 2 days.
As I write this it has been 3 days since I was supposed to have the computer in my possession. Apparently, I only learned this after I called several times, they need to "re-image" my hard drive. Everything I have on there (roughly $2000 worth of software and other important files) will be deleted and the computer will be sent to me exactly as it was the day I ordered it. When I asked if there was ANY way they could recover the data they told me it wasn't possible. I have been trying, to no avail, to get in touch with the same man that got this figured out last time. I am a full time college student, and finals are this week. All my files were on the computer with no backup (this was my mistake, but I felt they were safe because the computer is only 3 months old).
The bottom line is that, while the computer itself seems to be quality, my experience with compaq customer service will prevent me from ever buying another compaq product again.
