| kwsbanker's Full Review: Toshiba Portege 7020 |
I have been using Toshiba laptops for years. This is my latest. I love the 7020 for a few distinguishing features; and find it's design lacking for only a few others. So, here goes:
1) The portability and lightweight nature of the laptop (without the docking station) is remarkable.
2) I would recommend your buying a small attachment which allows you additional ports (which is also ultra-lightweight).
3) The keyboard is easy, with enough space between keys to be very manageable.
4) When using the docking station (strongly recommend) you have the added bonus of not needing peripherals - it comes complete with ports, a FDD as well as a DVD/CD-ROM drive. The latter is needed as a separate peripheral if you choose not to purchase the docking station, which could be a drag. The neat thing about the docking station is the DVD is great, and can connect directly to your TV (outputs), which is very convenient when using it from home.
The Toshiba laptops, I have found, are very reputable, and I have had little problems with it freezing or breaking down. I've been using it for 9 months. I do think some of the design features are a little weird. One particularly silly design item is the modem connector - it actually has to be opened on the side (of the machine, not the docking station) and sticks out. I can only think that the door feature is to protect foreign matters from getting stuck in there, but I also have difficulty opening it, and I fear the day that it breaks off. Your phone line actually fits into the little door on the side. Dumb. The other feature which is a little disconcerting is the lock/unlock feature on the docking station. If you are using any of the drives, you cannot unlock your computer, even though it says you have a lock/unlock while using feature.
All in all, this is a highly portable, powerful machine. Plenty of hard drive (upgradable) as well as SDRAM and peripherals galore. The price tag is a bit steep, but for Toshiba's (which I believe are the best on the market), you're getting quality for your money. I've had Toshiba Portege (660CDT and now the 7020), the Satellite and the Tecra. I am a believer.
