| ltowell's Full Review: Creative Labs 3D Blaster Annihilator |
As the local computer nerd I continually get asked (specifically by college students that feel the need to play games rather than finish their homework) what is the best 3D accelerator for games. This is my conclusion after running several in my labs and witnessing a couple others on friends’ machines.
The Creative Labs Creative Labs Annihilator Pro (GeForce DDR) is clearly the best. For just under $250 you get OpenGl, D3D, and Glide APIs. It has only been out for a few months, but I will be around for quite some time due to the DDR versions that are available. Grab any game and max out all the add-on effect, make sure you are in 32-bit color, and watch the frame rates fly by. The card is quickly and easily installed (less than 30 minutes start to finish) including the software.
In general it is almost good enough to warrant buying a new 3D accelerator weather you need one or not. I suppose if you own an SDR version of the GeForce, ATI Rage Fury MAXX (two x’s), or a Diamond Viper II, you will probably be able to survive, just realize that you settled for second best.
