Re: Opinion has nothing to do with Spam (Reply to this comment)
by gracef
I guess my definition is different than yours. My definition includes any email that is garbage.
Besides, I have often received mail like this from people that I barely know.

Opinion has nothing to do with Spam (Reply to this comment)

This opinion has nothing to do with spam. This opinion is about email from friend of the writer. Spam is email that you did not request.

My poor mother, for all the best reasons, (Reply to this comment)
by juliette
sent me (and about 96 of her closest retired cyberbuddies) an email about hypodermic needles in gas pump handles.
I called the number in the email (some out-of-(my)-state government body) and the message I got started out with, "If you are not calling about the hypodermic needle in the gas pump internet hoax, press one now. Otherwise be advised that we have no knowledge of this occurence...blah, blah, blah."
Was mom's face red! Live and learn. Actually doing some fact-checking is excellent advice; thanks for a great epinion.

Re: huh???? (Reply to this comment)

Sorry, but I found this very boring information that we all know all ready. Try again!
Yunno, it's really strange then. I must be the only one receiving all these UL email warnings from the 3-5 people your ALL does not cover.
What did I do to get picked on by the remnants of the UL brigade?!! I pay my taxes like most (not all, note carefully) people... ...t-þoo

Good advice (Reply to this comment)

Nice job! too bad anne landers and some others didn't check out the urban legends or other sites before using the item about the lives of the signers of the Declaration of Idependence. Several folks got fried on that one.

I'm a genius, too! (Reply to this comment)

I use the same links you listed in my email response to urban legends received. In my case, the word is not brilliant when used to describe me, but the word begins with a "b."
Thanks for posting this well written review, it needs to be stated over and over! Please, dear readers, listen to the wise gracef! Quit perpetuating urban legends!

Is my MIL your mom? (Reply to this comment)
by jnbmoore
I got the same one from my MIL. Now the silly ones that aren't attacks on folks (the 1000 dollars from Microsoft, etc) I would send her back corrections. When I got this one from her, I figured this was a personal attack and bearing false witness and wanted to STOP this one. (Plus this one was updated and the genius who updated it had Sixty Minutes with Janet Reno on a Saturday night) -- So I did what anyone would do. She had sent it to her entire address book -- I hit reply all.
Later that day I got a scathing note from my FIL about how if i had sent the correction (scopes link and another -- I had copy and pasted too , since most of the folks she sent it to were on Juno and only had email) to just mom he could have delt with me "putting her down" but because I had hit reply all I had "put her down" in front of ALL her friends and embarrassed her. No if I sent a correction they wouldn't have forwarded so I know I did the right thing.
The end result is I don't get forwards anymore. We were averaging 3-5 a day from her. I know she's still sending them to others. She just doesn't want me to embarass her again. Over the last six months I've sent her all the links you listed. That is how they spread and education doesn't always work.

PS did you read ladycynic's funny one on the same subject?

On kidneys stolen by the P&G Satanists (Reply to this comment)
by tipu
I hadn't heard of the Urban Myths site... I have a bunch of others listed in my webspace...
... one of the best sites I know of is the alt.folk.urban site: www.urbanlegends.com. It might not be as easy for the casual user to navigate, but often, when all other sites have failed, this one has given results. Just search for whatever you're looking for.
Heh heh, sometimes people don't like to be shown that these type of messages are hoaxes. I got into trouble with someone over a period of two weeks when she sent me maybe 3 or 4 urban legends and I sent her a list of links to show that these were ULs... also, some people didn't want their bubbles burst...
... ahh, the wish to believe...
Hey, wanna start an UL? How 'bout you write an email about Bill Gates stealing livers for software test purposes & I'll distribute it? (-;
Thanks Grace!... ...t-þoo

kidneys, streetlight hoodlums, and other mysteries (Reply to this comment)
by dr_valerie
Hi Grace,
The kidney legend has been circulating through my med school's bulletin boards for years now...medically speaking, it's impossible for someone to survive in a bathtub that long without ANY kidneys, and ICE??? Is that to keep the victim from overheating when he finds out someone took off with his internal organs?
Nevertheless, the story is perpetuated even among professional circles. Anyhow, great review, I had no idea there were sites to verify these stories, thank you for sharing the info!

I personally use these sites and can't understand why people believe this stuff. I could just about choke my friends and relatives when they send me these! Wish I could jolt them with a "joy buzzer" each time I open one! LOL!

Have you ever heard of Pavlov's dogs? It's kind of the same thing. After telling them enough times, "It's a rumor. Check this out! <insert URL here>", they eventually learn. And if they don't, remember that they're your friends or relatives and forgive them the fault as you do any others they might have! :)

BUT (Reply to this comment)
by poseidon
But I believe Janet Reno is a Clinton cultist. :)
Actually, for even better information, read the book "Alligators in the Sewers" which lists just about every Urban Legend made. I see variations of things in that book and I laugh whenever I see them come across e-mail.
I did a review on the book if you're interested.
