I bought a Sound Blaster 16 many years ago at Wal-Mart. It was fairly expensive at the time, being over $100 but I had to have sound. It was the best investment I've made. Over the years I've bought many other hardware items, but none have given me the reliabiity and lengthy service of my good ol' SB16.
You probably can't find these any more since the technology has long since bypassed 16bit sound. Myself I have a new and fancy sound card, but you know I really can't tell any significant increase in quality of sound. With my old SB16 I still heard the gunshots and screams of the evil I was fighting in whatever game I was playing. All my Windows sounds came through loud and clear. No complaints here. In fact my SB16 may still be in use by my roommate.
I've bought other Creative Labs products over the years due to my happiness with the SB16 but none have reached the longevity of that sound card. This is more of a tribute rather than a suggestion to buy one, since with today's technology you probably can't use the thing, but I've loved mine and never regret paying what I did for it.
