Great Business Tool.

Written: Nov 17 '00 (Updated Feb 26 '01)
Pros:Fun, interesting, reliable, useful, fairly easy, etc..
Cons:You really should know Visual Basic and SQL to get the most from the Program.
The Bottom Line: Excellent. It can save any person a lot of time and is relatively easy to learn. And WINDOWS!! A winning combination.

I'm currently taking an Access class at Boise State University.

Anyway... Seriously, Access 2000 is wonderful. Many business applications could be used. The basic idea is you have a database that contains tables(columns and rows of your information), reports, queries (questions that need to be answered), forms (user friendly forms that you/fellow employees enter information), macro --code behind a key, modules -- code behind a event, etc...

Tables that contain your information --like stocks, stock name, stock price, shares bought/sold, etc. Currently, I am creating a database for my Mom to keep track of her stocks, IRA, Money Markets, etc..

Queries search your tables for information. The information is then updated into your report, form or table.

Forms are used to enter information into tables.

Reports print out information in a formatted state, sometimes summarizing data, etc..

The code is in Visual Basic and SQL. It is sweet. You can click on the form, the control button, etc.. hit right click, click Properties, click Event and wala --- the Visual Basic and embedded SQL code behind the object. Yes, I'm in Love. The code is very simple and in most cases easy to use.

Also, Access gives you "wizards" that step by step guide you through the different processes. And you can use the code behind them to add code behind your control buttons.

Security -- you have control over users access to the database --two ways. 1. You can write your code to only show when an authorized user uses it. 2. You can directly add or delete users and their access to the database.

I hope you enjoy your Access program as well as I do. I'm looking forward to learning how to use Excel with Access, how to write a Cobol or C++ source program that uses the database, how to add graphs, etc..

Take care, number1mommy
