| Jandar's Full Review: Asus P3V4X |
Having read a few reviews about the motherboard, I decided to purchase this one. Asus has always been a pretty good maker of motherboards and other parts. The P3V4X continues this trend.
The P3V4X comes with 5 PCI, 1 ISA/PCI shared, and 1 AGP. 4 DIMM slots and a Slot 1 interface help make this board a great choice.
One of the great functions of this board is the ability to run the speed of the RAM seperatly from the speed of the CPU Bus. This means that you can run a Pentium 3 with a bus speed of 133Mhz, with RAM that was rated to run at 100Mhz.
With this ability comes the ease of overclocking. While this might void your warranty on your CPU, it does add advantages to a stock speed. I currently run a Pentium 3 650Mhz (6.5 multiplier with a 100Mhz speed) at 866Mhz (6.5 Multiplier with a 133Mhz BUS speed). I also have 100Mhz RAM. I couldn't accomplish this with many other boards.
The one downside these boards have is the Apollo Pro 133A chipset. This chipset has low memory throughput compared to the BX , 810, 815, or 820 chipsets. This can be increased some by doing tweaks in the system BIOS, not a thing for the timid though.
If you are deciding on a new board, this one still has lots of life left in it.
