| filmbrat's Full Review: Dell Dimension L667 |
I finally faced reality earlier this month - my sputtering, old computer just wasn't hacking it. I was falling behind quickly in the wired world, creeping along on AOL, getting excited when I could successfully load Yahoo! or Epinions on the screen. The final nail in the coffin was when I couldn't play The XFiles Game, because my processor was too slow, and the screen couldn't generate the graphics. If anyone has read my review on the XFiles game (and if you haven't, now here's my shameless plug for my review!), you would know that I was willing to sacrifice everything on my computer to be able to play my beloved game. But alas, it was to be no more on my old machine.
I was a bit overwhelmed at the idea of purchasing a new system. I have vague knowledge of computer components - enough to be dangerous with, anyways, but not enough to feel comfortable to buy a system alone. I first talked to a few techie people (it pays to be nice to them at my job) to get some general info on what I should be looking for. I then set out and compared the major dealers. I narrowed it down to Dell and Gateway, but I found that Gateway's prices were higher. So, it was Dell I chose.
The Dell website is fairly easy to use - the computers are already built, and they do allow some customization. I settled on the 667r, because it basically fit my needs. I'm a moderate computer user; internet heavy; but don't need a monster system. The software package was moderate - a light version of the Microsoft office products (Word, and then a "generic" Excel, Publisher, etc), plus AOL, and some other bells and whistles (like a MP3 jukebox program, to go along with Napster.com, it seems). I even got a special deal to upgrade to a DVD-rom drive for free. The payment methods are great - you have the option to pay for the entire system outright, or go on a purchase payment plan.
I did run into a problem with my credit card company, and Dell was quick to contact me regarding it. They also clearly laid out my other options. I did resolve the issue over the phone, and the Dell rep was very detailed on what would happen next, when the computer would ship, and where I could find out order tracking information. Great customer service!
My computer arrived a week later, all packaged neatly, with step-by-step instructions of how to hook everything up. You turn the computer on - and it immediately takes you through a tutorial set-up. Everything is labeled, and the wires are even color-coordinated with the jacks they go into (a major plus in my world).
Within minutes, I was loading up my XFiles game and on my way (yes, that was the first thing I did when everything was up and running!). I couldn't be happier. Mulder and Scully never looked better than now on my monitor. :)
