The strangest part about quickdot is that it works. For some reason people respond better (at least my friends) to this simple program than to email itself! Very strange, and yes it could just be my strange friends but I think that this aspect alone keeps me using this program. But enough of blind commentary, I think I shall start my review now.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Quickdot is an easy website that allows people to send little messages to their friends or business workers or family. You add all your friends that you think would enjoy this program (and some that you just want to tick off) and make them join this note passing system. All you have to do to see your notes is to go the site, log on and you can see the messages that people have written to you. When you write a message to a friend, quickdot sends that person a short email telling them that they’ve been dotted. Very simply idea and very simple program.
THE GOOD
Like I mentioned before, for some strange reason my friends are more inclined to respond to me when I quickdot them. For a program that does the same thing as email I found it quite strange that my friends were more inclined to use this program than to just press the respond button on their email accounts. But in any case, the program is really well done, it is very easy to navigate around and it is very easy to add new friends to your lists.
Another good thing about quickdot is their email program. They send a quick email to you stating that you have been dotted and then if you haven’t read your quickdot after a certain amount of time, it will email you again telling you so. This may seem a bit irritating, but for me it was a nice touch because I easily forget to check my quickdot account even if I get the emails.
The main reason that I liked quickdot (besides the fact that my friends would actually respond using the system) was that you could check your friend’s messages without checking your email. You can log into quickdots whenever you want, yet to check your email you might need the correct software. Now I realize that you may never be in a situation like that, but for me, it was a nice touch to have. Sometimes you are at a place where you only can have internet access and they have deleted all the software that you need to check the rest of your mail. Sure you could download all the software that you need, but that takes such a long time. With quickdot you can send and receive anywhere you have internet access.
THE BAD
This really is just an email program. And most of my friends realized this fact. Actually a lot of them resented the fact that I was using a program that was the same thing as email yet an extra couple of steps to get a short note. If you really think about it, your message’s path is from a web browser to a note to your friend to go to the quickdot page to read the same message that you could have just sent directly. It can be a bother.
I don’t think that I would ever use this program to contact clients. Quite frankly if my friends get irritated with the program I don’t want to think of what clients might think of me for using it to contact them.
Quickdot does not save your old messages. If you erase them (or actually if your friend erases them when they write a new message) then that information is gone forever. This can cause very many problems. But quickdot is just what it says it is, a quick message. These are not meant to be full emails, just little notes to one another.
OVERALL
Though I don’t think that this is the best way to communicate with your friends and family there are a few benefits for using this program. And though my friends were initially very irritate with the system, they still somehow always wanted to write a short message to me using it. Strange world with strange people!
