Solid MachinesDec 29 '00 Write an essay on this topic.Simply put, Dell makes nice machines. As a techie whose built more machines for friends than I care to remember, I don't bother much anymore. I just recommend Dell. Their systems are well-constructed, with all internal cables neatly bundled and tied away, making upgrades quite easy. Their cases have great internal airflow and cooling, and are easy to open and get components in and out of. You get CDs with all your drivers, bundled software (such as Office 2000) and Operating System (Microsoft products) -- no recovery CD with a pre-configured image here! I've had a few issues finding driver updates for Dell OEM ("Original Equipment Manufacturer" - basically, they buy a component that was made specifically for them) items can be a bit second class, mostly with some minor driver issues (i.e. Dell hasn't updated the drivers on their site but the "real" manufacturer has, but recommends using Dell's drivers instead) video cards (especially high-end 3D gaming cards like the nVidia's TNT) and their DVD hardware-decompression cards (which appears to be a complete OEM card with no major brand identification on it) but overall my experience has been positive. Customer service and returns are great. A bad monitor (it went fuzzy after being on for 10-15 minutes) was replaced via overnight Fedex, and a defective CD-ROM was upgraded to a faster model for no charge because the older ones were out of stock. I've owned 3 Dells now: 2 laptops and a desktop. Next year I'll be buying another desktop and it will be another Dell. |
